Funding Opportunities

These funding opportunities are designed to support the growth and development of our research enterprise and help attract and retain top scholars.

The Offices of the Vice-President and Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation collectively sponsor a number of internal funding programs designed to support the strategic goals of the university.

Our research facilitation team can assist UBC Okanagan researchers in identifying additional internal and external funding opportunities.

Principal’s Research Chairs Program

The Principal’s Research Chairs (PRC) program is designed to provide research support for UBC Okanagan faculty engaged in outstanding research or creative scholarship. The goal of the Principal’s Research Chairs program is to:

  1. Retain our top researchers
  2. Enable recruitment of outstanding new faculty
  3. Promote research intensification
  4. Generate international recognition of research achievements

Program Details


application process:

Deans may submit multiple requests for a Principal’s Research Chair allocations but are required to provide a ranked list of final requests in a cover letter accompanying the submitted application packages.

evaluation:

The Provost and Vice-President, Academic & Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation review nomination files and make recommendations to the Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for final approval.

Critical Research Equipment & Tools (cret) Program

The Critical Research Equipment & Tools Program competition was established by the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation to support the acquisition, development, repairs, replacement or creation of critical research infrastructure at UBC Okanagan.

Access to cutting-edge, high-quality research equipment and tools is essential if researchers at UBC Okanagan are to operate at the leading edge. Through this annual funding program, we aim to improve the range and quality of our research infrastructure, keep pace with technology, and provide opportunities for student research training.

Eminence Program

The Eminence competition was established by the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation to support the development of clusters of research excellence at UBC Okanagan.

A cluster of research excellence is an interdisciplinary network of researchers focused on addressing key challenges facing society.

The Eminence Program is specifically intended to catalyze research and knowledge creation initiatives that will be used strategically to attract further external opportunities (e.g., partnerships, grants, trainee support programs, corporate sponsorship, NGO collaborations etc.). The Eminence Program has been designed to support clusters that leverage existing strengths and are aligned with the strategic plans of the units, faculties, campus and university.

  • A free-form proposal addressing the evaluation criteria (four pages maximum)
  • Annual budgets and justifications for each year of funding using the budget template
  • A 2-page CV for each cluster member which highlights key accomplishments relevant to the proposed cluster activities
  • Optional – Up to three letters of support from relevant secured partners
  • Optional – Re-submission response (1 page maximum)

Aspire Program

The Aspire program supplements the one-time start-up funding provided by the faculties to new professorial recruits. A total of 26 startup funding packages have been offered since the program was launched in 2017 with a 100% success rate – meaning every Aspire package offered has resulted in the successful recruitment of a top scholar to UBC Okanagan.

evaluation:

Decisions on Aspire Fund disbursements will be made collectively by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Provost and Vice-President Academic, and the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation.

Collaborative Research Mobility Awards

UBC Collaborative Research Mobility Awards are designed to support research collaboration across UBC in Vancouver and the Okanagan by providing funding to:

  • initiate new or strengthen existing research collaborations;
  • enable travel to access unique infrastructure/core facilities at each location or to hold research meetings;
  • support travel, per diems, and accommodations for UBC researchers

Faculty members eligible to hold research grants from all disciplines are invited to apply to the UBC Collaborative Research Mobility Awards program. These awards facilitate collaboration on timely research opportunities between UBC researchers in Vancouver and the Okanagan. Competitions will be held four times per year. Up to $5,000 is available for each proposal to initiate new or strengthen existing research collaborations.

PROGRAM FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (pure)

Broadening access to, and enhancing, undergraduate research experiences is a central priority in UBC’s new strategic plan (Shaping UBC’s Next Century). UBC committed $1m in strategic funds over 2 years for the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE). The initial call for proposals was for innovative pilot projects.

Supporting undergraduate research that provides an academic contribution to an area or discipline or demonstrates a practical application of academic learning with consequences for society.
