Infrastructure Funding

Our office provides administrative and strategic support to researchers pursuing major infrastructure funding.

Our Institutional Programs team manages major federal, provincial and regional research awards, including the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) and Western Economic Diversification Canada (WED). We also support include large scale institutional research projects such as the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program.

Canada Foundation for Innovation

Since its creation in 1997, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has ensured Canadian researchers have the cutting-edge labs, facilities and equipment they need to push the frontiers of knowledge in all disciplines.

The John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) is a Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Program designed to help universities attract and retain the best researchers at a time of intense international competition in priority areas as identified in the university’s Strategic Research Plan . It allows UBC to acquire infrastructure for their UBC Okanagan research faculty to undertake cutting-edge research and create competitive packages of research support for infrastructure, direct research costs and operating funds.

application process:

Information on UBC-wide procedures is available on the Applying for CFI Funding page on the Institutional Programs website. A detailed description of the UBC Okanagan CFI Application Instructions & Deadlines (for UBC Okanagan applicants) is available below.

One month following the submission to CFI, a matching funds application must be submitted to the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF). A full BCKDF Step 1 proposal is part of the internal adjudication and selection of proposals. Refer to the BCKDF website for guidelines, application form template and webinar extract.

Proposals are vetted internally and only strong proposals are selected for submission to CFI. As internal screening is rigorous, applicants are encouraged to prepare well-developed applications.

CFI’s Innovation Fund program is designed to assist researchers to the establish productive collaborations at the institutional, regional, national and international levels. Such collaborations will improve our ability to generate new ideas, insights and knowledge, as well as support the sustainability of the research infrastructure necessary to operate at the highest levels of research excellence.

competition timeline:

The Canada Foundation for Innovation new model of permanent funding will allow Innovation Fund competitions at regular intervals of 24 to 30 months. The Canada Foundation for Innovation launched a Call for Proposals for the Innovation Fund in early 2019 and results are anticipated in Fall 2020.

The next competition is expected to be launched in Fall 2021 or Winter 2022.

Institutions should plan strategically to propose mature projects, and continue to develop promising ones for future competitions.  Contact Christine Humphries as early as possible to begin planning a proposal for a future competition.

Application process:

UBC researchers are required to submit an internal Expression of Interest (EOI) before applying to the Innovation Fund. The EOI is mandatory for all projects in which UBC is to be the lead or a partner and for which the researcher is requesting funds from the UBC envelope.
