Quick Pitch Challenge
The e@UBCO Quick Pitch Challenge will be held in March at the Innovation Centre in downtown Kelowna. It will kick-off with a networking reception and innovation showcase for a large audience of investors, business executives, and community leaders.
Teams from two streams (described below) will each be given 10 minutes to pitch their business concept and be judged by a panel of Valhalla Angels.
Finalists will compete for valuable cash prizes and will receive extensive publicity at the event and via e@UBCO and partner channels (eg. e-newsletter, social media, media release). First, second, and third prizes will be awarded in each stream, along with an audience choice award.
1- Youthful Cities Hackathon Stream
This stream is designed for UBCO teams and individuals who want to build their entrepreneurial IQ and are enrolled in e@UBCO Lean LaunchPad (LLP) Accelerator program (Track 1).
In September, teams will accept a challenge to solve one of our region’s biggest ‘live, work, play’ challenges and address gaps identified by the YouthfulCities Canadian Urban Work Index (funded by RBC Future Launch). Kelowna is rated 14th on the index. Challenges include:
- Education (affordability, access and work integrated learning experiences);
- Entrepreneurship (spirit, spaces, programming);
- Affordability (housing, utilities, transportation, food/clothing, leisure, health); and
- Employment (basic, career-oriented, city economic profile, programs)
Over a period of six months, each team will develop a solution, learn how to pitch, and how to build a viable business model for their idea. Teams will receive guidance from UBC Okanagan experts from multiple disciplines, including engineering, management, health sciences, computer sciences and/or digital media and vie for one of three finalist spots in the ‘Youthful Cities Hackathon’ stream of e@UBCO’s Quick Pitch Challenge. The solutions generated will help boost Kelowna’s ranking in the YouthfulCities Index.
2- Venture Stream
This stream is designed for ventures that are enrolled in the e@UBCO Lean LaunchPad (LLP) Accelerator program (Tracks 2, 3 or 5). Each team will vie for one of three “finalist” pitch spots in the Venture portion of the competition.
