Indigenous Research Support Initiative

The Indigenous Research Support Initiative (IRSI) was established by the UBC Vancouver campus in 2017 to develop tools and resources to support Indigenous community-based research at UBC. IRSI is committed to:

  1. Enabling Collaborative RelationshipsIdentifying and supporting collaborative research with Indigenous communities and to create safe spaces for dialogue
  2. Building Better Practices of EngagementBuilding university and community capacity to undertake collaborative projects and co-create principles and effective practices of engagement
  3. Supporting Research ExcellenceSupporting the development of emerging projects and research clusters between indigenous communities, university researchers and other partners

The types of support offered by IRSI staff include:

  • Point of contact for Indigenous communities and researchers
  • Coordination and co-development of collaborative research projects
  • Assist in finding resources to support the development of partnerships (research enabling grants)
  • Development of collaborative MOU’s, research agreements and engagement protocols
  • Ethics considerations
  • Information sharing
  • Relationship management and conflict resolution
  • Thought leadership
  • Opportunities for mutual learnings

Interior University Research Coalition

The Interior University Research Coalition (IURC) is a partnership between the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in Prince George, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, and the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna. At the heart of this coalition is a shared commitment to participating in partnerships that focus on:

  • Fostering research excellence, knowledge and innovation
  • Harmonizing resources
  • Enhancing academic opportunities
  • Increasing benefits for communities throughout the BC Interior
