Dr. Pakpour and Dr. Noonan’s research teams were each awarded $600,000 over three years for their investigations into the effects of plastics on animals and ecosystems.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Dr. Sepideh Pakpour and Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Noonan who were both awarded research funding through Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)‘s Plastics Science and Innovation for a Cleaner and More Sustainable Future competition.

Dr. Pakpour and her team are investigating the health impacts of nanoplastics in mammals and Dr. Noonan and team are mapping terrestrial microplastic pollution and wildlife exposure across Canadian ecosystems. Combined the two teams were awarded $1.2 million.

This ongoing UBCO research is helping generate evidence that can advance scientific knowledge and inform the development of evidence-based policies and regulations on plastics.
